Assignment #2
Dramatic Light and Color – Self Portrait
This project’s focus is on experimenting with dramatic/subdued lighting, intense/dulled color, and the transparent capabilities of acrylic.
The subject of this assignment is your-self. Try to find that about your outward self you would like to emphasize through light and color. Think about:
-How can you make yourself appear to be more dramatic?
-How can the use of color and the portrayal of light be used in painting?
-What effects do color and light portrayal have on your subject matter?
-How does your portrayal effect what your audience knows?
-How many different techniques can you use to accomplish this painting?
For ideas of how other painters deal with portraiture and the figure, take a look at some choice artists:
Alice Neel Adelaide Labille-Guiard Artemisia Gentileschi Francisco Goya
Lucian Freud Angelica Kaufman Emil Nolde Gustave Courbet
Mary Cassat Mary Moser Paul Gaugin Marlene Dumas
Elisabeth-Louise Vigee-Lebrun Judith Leyster Jim Dine George Roualult
