Extended Project 3

Pattern and Texture

Focus: To take what we have learned about shape, form, volume, value and color to create a pattern built on repetitive shapes or forms and then develop this into an idea of texture.

For this assignment, you will need:

10 thumbnail sketches in your sketchbook of interesting shapes you find in your everyday environment.

From these 10 images choose one; use a portion of this image. You should use no more than half and no less than one quarter of the image to create your pattern. The pattern you create will be 12 x 12 inches in 1 x 1 inch grid format.

The first 12 x 12 inch pattern will be a pencil value study. Work the shapes up to create volumetric forms using the basic black to white value scale.

The second 12 x 12 in pattern will be in color. Use one of the two following color progressions to recreate the value in the pencil study in color.

                        -Complementary color progression

                        -Analogous color progression

To be turned in:

1.      Color Wheel

2.      Analogous color progression in minimum of 9 steps

3.      Analogous as a value study

4.      Complementary color progression in minimum of 9 steps

5.      Complementary color progression as a value study

6.      12 x 12 inch pencil value study of pattern into visual texture

7.      12 x 12 inch color progression study of pattern into visual texture
